We are overwhelmed with
the rise of evil in the world. Truly, the coming of the
Lord is near. In Isaiah 49:15 we read: "Can
a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion
on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I
will not forget you.”
This is the greatest assurance we can have. The Lord will
never forget His children! However, in this world of sin
and despair, mothers and fathers are turning their backs
to their needy children.
Let me share with you the latest call the Lord has placed
before us. As you read this letter, I am back in India,
loaded with suitcases
full of medicine and much needed clothing for poor children
who are truly suffering. We are starting a new orphanage
as well as a home for old people. These two new projects
are extremely needed because children and the elderly
have nowhere to turn and we find them on the streets suffering
the extreme conditions of the Himalayan Mountains.
We have started the orphanage in a rented building as
we prepare to build a proper structure for this work.
We have already admitted 13 very desperate children, each
with a dramatic story of untold suffering. Let me tell
you the story of two little boys, SHAHIL who is 8 years
old and his brother SANGAM, 6. They have come to us from
a place called Phancytar, nearly 50 km away from Darjeeling.
Shahil and Sangam have five other siblings. After Sangam,
the youngest of the family, was born, their father was
utterly overwhelmed by the reality that he could not adequately
provide for them, so he left without a trace. Later, being
overburdened with the responsibility, their mother also
abandoned them. Their oldest sister was barely 16 when
she was left with the heavy burden of somehow supporting
her 6 siblings. She began working as a laborer in road
construction. It was incredibly tough for her. We have
taken in the two youngest of the family and we pray that
these two precious boys will be able to have the healing
of memories and perhaps, with lots of love and prayer,
they will manage to break the chain of their past misery
and become established in society. Like Shahil and Sangan,
there are so many other children. We dare not turn our
back to them. We need to help now!
The other project I mentioned is the old people’s
home. In our western countries, we rely on medical care,
hospitals, pension plans and retirement homes. For these
people, there is nothing of the kind. As I write, I think
of “Don Pedro” as we used to call him. He
was a very old man in the Dominican Republic, about 100
years old. He lived in a ramshackle hut with his blind
wife. He had absolutely nothing and, till the day he died,
he had to try to work to survive. How grateful and happy
he was when he would receive something to help him! We
need to help!. We need to do our utmost!
I think of my own mother,
now 95 years old. She is enjoying her final days in a
very beautiful setting in a Christian nursing home in
Italy. While she is very grateful to God for His provision,
she feels so sad that she no longer has the financial
means to support this work. Every month she tries to set
a few euros aside to help the poor of India. Oh, that
we all would do our very best with love and sacrifice.
Please help us with your prayers! I am not asking for
material help for myself. I would never ask for any material
goods for me or for my natural children but woe unto me
if my pride or fear of criticism would stop me from interceding
for help for these new children and old people that God
is placing in our lives!
Please, as never before, would you bow your head and ask
the Lord to be the provider and keeper of His work? May
we be sensitive to His heartbeat even as He spoke and
touched me! I know that He will bring a harmony to our
hearts and in the work that He has decided to do through
us. God Bless You!
